BM TRADA is supporting Admaterials Technologies Pte Ltd (Admaterials), both part of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ (ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ), to expand the scope of its services to include the certification of structural steel fabrication to SS EN1090 for Singapore fabricators and specialist builders.
Singapore will launch its own equivalent of the European Standard, SS EN 1090, making some amendments specific to the local market as part of its implementation. EN 1090 has been mandatory in the UK since 2014 and as a result, BM TRADA has gained considerable knowledge of its application. Due to this extensive experience of carrying out certification to EN1090, Principal Technical Officer, Niresh Somlie, was asked by Admaterials to provide training on the certification procedures and audit skills required, according to the European Standard. Niresh also served as external auditor to Admaterials’ first witness audit at local steel fabricator, Sterling Engineering Pte Ltd which has since been assessed by the Singapore Accreditation Council.
The Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS) also employed Niresh to lead a practical workshop, conducted earlier this month, in order to prepare the industry for the new certification standard. The workshop focused on both technical and factory production control (FPC) responsibilities placed on manufacturers of structural steel products and covered a number of topics relevant to EN/SS 1090, including:
- the Construction Products Directive and Construction Products Regulation;
- CE Marking;
- an overview of EN 1090;
- factory production control and requirements;
- welding requirements;
- EN ISO 3834 and BS EN ISO 14731 requirements;
- responsible welding co-ordination;
- design and design methods;
- execution class and requirements;
- cutting, inspection and testing;
- durability requirements; and
- audits.
Rob Veitch, EVP Fire & Building Products at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ said: “We are happy to support Admaterials, part of the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Group, in Singapore to expand their capability and, with this SSSS workshop, support ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in expanding our services to the steel fabrication certification industry in the ASEAN region.
The Singapore market will benefit from this important development as it will give manufacturers and those affected by EN SS 1090 a comprehensive understanding of the Standard and requirements to demonstrate compliance and meet legal and statutory obligations.
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s global network of laboratories means that increasingly we can help customers and other stakeholders through deploying expertise across continents and further develop our own business at the same time.”
BM TRADA provides a range of certification schemes for CE marking including for structural steel to BS EN 1090-1 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures.
