Additive Manufacturing Titanium 6Al-4V ELI with Powder Bed Fusion

The continuous development of additive manufacturing processes for titanium medical devices has opened the door to complex designs with improved anatomic geometries.

Though additive manufacturing provides many advantages, the components produced through these methods require mechanical and material properties similar to those produced through traditional means. Additional considerations need to be made by both producers and purchasers when evaluating these types of devices and manufacturing processes.

In this article, our experts provide insight on the qualification and validation testing of Titanium 6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitial) components produced using powder bed fusion methods (such as electron beam melting and laser melting) as outlined in ASTM F3001.

The methods outlined include:

  • Powder characterization
  • Production lot or batch build validation
  • Chemical composition
  • Mechanical testing
  • Microstructure evaluation
